Tracking Systems
Tracking systems come with help in case your laptop was stolen. Special software installed on your laptop will communicate with central, when your laptop is connected to the Internet. Then it is possible to locate your laptop. Another tracking system includes GPS (Global Positioning System) to track exact position of your laptop even if it is not connected to the Internet. These methods are really effective but quite expensive. In our opinion they are too expensive for average owner of cheap, refurbished laptop.
Some tracking software includes feature to remove selected data from disk when laptop is reported to be stolen. This feature allows you to protect sensitive data from being accessed by incompetent person.
TheftGuard included in new Phoenix BIOS is similar solution to tracking software but it is installed in BIOS chip instead of hard drive so removing it is almost impossible.
Companies that offer tracking include CompuTrace, Stealth Signal, zTrace, Generation Security and some others.
