Mechanical Theft Protections

Cable Locks

Targus Cable Lock The most popular and cheap mechanical protections against theft are cable locks. They basically look like cable locks used to lock bikes. You need only Universal Security Slot (USS), which is simply a little oval hole in your laptop casing. The majority of today's laptops contain USS. Wrap the cable around some immovable object and attach second end to your laptop's USS. Of course such lock is vulnerable in the same way as bike locks are - they are breakable with bolt cutters. Anyway, it is very good protection against thieves. Your laptop might be stolen from your office while you are out to toilet. Closing all applications, turning off the laptop and hiding it into cabinet every time you want to go out for few minutes is not really comfortable. With cable lock you don't have to worry so much about it. Prices of cable locks vary from $20 to even $60 depending on quality of product.

Alarms

Kryptonite Alarm Another protection against thefts is an alarm. There are few types of alarms. Some react on movement. If somebody moves your laptop or a laptop bag, a loud alarm will sound focusing everybody's attention on thief. Another consists of two parts, one attached to laptop or laptop bag and second to keep with you. If the distance between both parts will rise above allowed level, the alarm will sound.
