According to FBI, over 97% of stolen computers are never recovered because they
are unmarked. Marking your laptop with asset tag or engraving your personal data on it
greatly increases chances of recovering it back. It would make selling such
computer much more difficult for thief as your name would be engraved on
outer case.
The most popular asset tracking system is S.T.O.P. It is tamper-proof plate with barcode and indelible tattoo that provides you with easy and cheap solution to theft prevention and laptop recovery in case of being stolen.
STOP plates are intended to deterrent thieves by warning them that laptop is police traceable. It also notifies potential buyer that it might be stolen equipment. All laptops marked with STOP asset tags are listed in international tracking database, making it easy to report the laptop was stolen or check the laptop you are going to buy.
Asset tags are made from photo-anodized aluminum and are affixed to laptop case with cyanoacrylate adhesive. It's so strong that removal would noticeably, physically alter the case. Additionally, there is a tattoo saying "Stolen Property" etched into case. It's chemically installed, and impossible to remove without scratching or destroying plastic in other way.
There is also red warning message installed together with STOP plate. It clearly says that laptop is protected by STOP system, marked and "Police Identifiable" along with information that tattoo has been etched into the laptop case.
